Sheffield Central MP: Abtisam Mohammed beats Eddie Izzard as new Labour candidate
Abtisam Mohammed has been selected to stand as the next parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Central, besting comedian Eddie Izzard and several other candidates
Ms Mohamed, a councillor for Sheffield City Council, was chosen to replace MP Paul Blomfield, who said he would stand down at the next general election.
Ms Mohamed was shortlisted alongside Eddie Izzard, Jayne Dunn and Rizwana Lala.
On Twitter, Ms Mohamed said she was “feeling deeply inspired by the strength of support” she had received
She said: “I’d just like to say a huge thank you to every member in Sheffield who has supported me.
“I’ve had so many conversations with members over the last few weeks, and each one has been useful, enriching and challenging. I’d expect nothing less from Labour members!”
Ms Mohamed, who grew up in Sheffield, said her priorities are being a voice for the community, fighting inequality, pursuing a greener economy, and investing in the future, amidst the cost of living crisis.
Following the announcement, Mr Blomfield tweeted his support for Ms Mohamed, saying she would be “a brilliant MP”.
Mr Blomfield said: “I’ve always been impressed with the way she brings people together, working hard to win change for those most in need. I’ve known her a long time, and I know the drive and passion she’ll bring as our next MP.”
Eddie Izzard said: “I want to congratulate Abtisam Mohamed on her victory in the Sheffield Central selection contest today.
“She will make a fine MP and I look forward to campaigning with her in the months and years to come.”
