Fargate containers opening delayed again

Sheffield’s Fargate shipping container district was set to open on Monday 17 October but the Sheffield City Council has announced that it will be delayed.

This comes after several months of delays when the district was originally set to open in June.

Richard Eyre, Director of Streetscene and Regulations, said: “I know many people have been looking forward to heading down. We are equally as disappointed as many others will be.”

The cause of the delay was reported to be a lack of technical information from the operator that the Building Control team awaits.

Mr Eyre said: “Until the outstanding information is received the container park cannot open. This information is national legislation.”

The district is set to host six businesses, including shops, restaurants and bars, which have all been informed about the delay.

The site cost £446,000 and was paid for by central government grants via the Get Britain Building fund.

Sheffield’s City Council stated an update will be provided as soon as possible.
